Boyds confidently occupies the space between relaxed brasserie and formal dining room, focusing on modern British cuisine with a particular nod to the grill, complemented, as the name suggests, by a curated wine list. It aims to be a sophisticated haven amidst the West End bustle, offering a dose of glamour alongside familiar comforts. Does it deliver on this promise of elevated grill dining? Let’s just say the marble columns aren’t the only impressive feature here.

It’s a heritage space that could feel intimidating, yet clever lighting and well-spaced tables prevent it from feeling cold or cavernous. Instead, there’s a low, sophisticated buzz, particularly during peak evening hours. The decor wisely lets the architecture do the talking, with plush seating in muted tones adding comfort without competing. Service strikes a commendable balance – professional and attentive without feeling intrusive. Staff seem well-versed in the menu and wine list, offering recommendations readily. Our server was notably adept at gauging the table’s pace, ensuring courses arrived smoothly without ever making us feel rushed – a welcome touch in pre-theatre territory.

Sizzling Steaks and British Classics: A Culinary Deep Dive

The menu at Boyds champions British provenance and seasonality, with the grill section taking pride of place, as expected. However, it’s not solely about steak; thoughtful starters, well-executed mains, and classic desserts round out the offering, ensuring broad appeal. A classic starter executed with finesse. The scallops themselves were plump and boasted that perfect caramelised sear, locking in their natural sweetness while remaining meltingly tender within. They arrived nestled alongside a vibrant pea purée, its earthy sweetness a lovely counterpoint. Crispy pancetta added a welcome salty crunch and textural contrast, while a drizzle of lemon oil cut through the richness. A confident and appealing opening act, presented elegantly without unnecessary fuss.

Dry-Aged Ribeye Steak (8oz)
Given the restaurant’s name, a steak felt obligatory, and the Ribeye didn’t disappoint. Cooked precisely to the requested medium-rare, the meat showcased good marbling, resulting in a juicy, flavourful steak with that characteristic richness Ribeye lovers seek. It possessed a satisfying char from the grill, adding a smoky depth. Served simply with a choice of sauce (the Béarnaise was creamy and well-balanced, if perhaps a fraction too subtle on the tarragon) and chunky, properly crisp chips, it was a testament to letting quality ingredients shine. A solid, satisfying centrepiece.

Sticky Toffee Pudding
Ending on a comforting high note, the Sticky Toffee Pudding was a masterclass in this beloved British dessert. The date-studded sponge was surprisingly light and moist, avoiding the stodginess that can sometimes plague this dish. It swam – quite happily – in a pool of glossy, dark toffee sauce that was rich and buttery without being cloying. A scoop of vanilla bean ice cream provided the essential cool contrast, melting seductively into the warm sauce. Pure, unadulterated comfort, executed beautifully.

The “Wine Bar” part of the name isn’t just for show. The list is extensive, with a good range by the glass, carafe, and bottle, covering various regions and price points.
